Apple is gearing up for its first major hardware and software launches of 2014. The Cupertino-based company is “tentatively” planning a keynote address in mid-September to announce the iPhone 6 and provide final details on iOS 8, according to sources briefed on the plans. These people say that the second and third weeks of September are the mostly likely weeks for the event to be held, but they add that manufacturing uncertainties could alter the event’s timeframe....

Confirming our earlier suspicions, Apple today showed off some new features for its iWork suite of apps, which includes both Mac and iOS versions of the Pages, Numbers, and Keynote apps. While Apple confirmed that new versions of the apps for Mac and iOS would be coming later in the year, it spent its presentation today showing off brand new web versions of the apps designed to run right in the browser through iCloud....

When you download or stream content from Apple – be it Apple Music, an app or an OS X update – that content is often delivered by a third-party Content Delivery Network, or CDN. The idea is to allow you to download it from a server close to you to maximize download speeds. It now appears that Apple is moving more of its content delivery in-house, as the company brings more data centers online....

The folks over at Apple Toolbox have shared a number of aerial photos capturing the demolition progress of the future site of Apple’s Campus 2 ‘spaceship’. As you can see above, the former site of Hewlett-Packard that Apple purchased in 2010 is leveling out ahead of the expected 2016 completion date. Campus 2 designer Norman Foster discussed the project’s evolution and Steve Jobs’ involvement earlier this week, and late last month we saw a less clear shot of the plot undergoing demolition....

As noted by MacRumors, Apple has been denied the tradmark for multi-touch, which they applied for on January 9, 2007 after the first iPhone was introduced. Once the decision was reached by the the Board, Apple then filed for an appeal which was then again shot-down. Excerpt from the decision that is embedded after the break: Apple was denied the trademark simply because it is too broad, and lacks distinctiveness to Apple alone....

Apple has just released iOS 14.5 beta 6 to developers, and while this version already comes with several new features, the company has added one more in its latest beta. iPhone users will now have a tool to recalibrate the device’s internal battery when it’s not performing as expected. Apple expects the new battery recalibration tool will help users to “address inaccurate estimates of battery health reporting for some users.” For an unknown reason, this feature is only compatible with iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max for now....

‘Course. what makes the analysis just the tiniest bit speculative is that Portelligent has released its estimated cost of iPhone 3G manufacture based entirely on educated guesses as to what components are used in the device. The raw cost of materials to build the iPhone 3G could be nearly half that of the original model, according to Portelligent. While the first model had a build cost of c. $170, the new breed could cost as little as $100 to make, said Potelligent president, David Carey....

Apple TV+ is less than a month away from launching with the company’s first original shows. However, Apple doesn’t own any of that content but that’s set to change moving forward. Apple is launching its in-house studio as it gets set to produce a new WWII drama called Masters of the Air, a follow-up to HBO’s popular Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Apple is launching its own in-house studio to create original content....

Citing insider sources, the report explains that fewer than 15 per cent of all the iPhones sold by O2 when it slashed prices on the 8GB model actually ended up in use on the carrier’s network. The rest of them were unlocked for use on other UK networks, or were sold abroad. That move likely reflects habit and custom among mobile users in the UK, who are now well-versed in switching networks to get the best deal....

The company is continuing a fight-back which began in 1999, when Dell surpassed Apple in the US education market for the first time. Apple finally pressed pass the competing PC firm on the basis of laptop sales in the first quarter of this year, as then confirmed by COO Tim Cook. Apple remains number two to Dell in the US education market overall, because of Dell’s strength in desktop PCs – Dell had 38....

Besides Apple now allowing users to view the top 300 iOS apps, Apple has reportedly changed up their App Store ranking algorithm. Inside Mobile Apps reports that Apple’s ranking system may not completely rely on the amount of downloads per day anymore. It’s definitely too early to be certain, but it looks like App Store rankings may now also adjust based on application usage and ranking. Perhaps Apple also wanted to move the 10 bird apps out of the top 10 rankings....

Apple has now been overtaken by Google in ‘Enterprise Value,’ a key measure of the value of a company, despite generating four times as much cash flow, reports Seeking Alpha. While Apple’s market capitalisation (the total value of all its shares) remains higher, this value includes $141B in cash. Enterprise Value deducts any cash held by a company as – if you were wealthy enough to buy Apple – you effectively immediately get that back from the price you paid....

Just one day after Apple was questioned by the House Judiciary Committee, another antitrust complaint against Apple has been made – this time by secure messaging app Telegram. The Financial Times reports that Telegram submitted the complaint to the European Union’s competition regulator … Telegram co-founder and CEO Pavel Durov outlined his arguments in a blog post a few days earlier. He suggested that Apple’s defence of its 30% commission is based on seven myths – beginning with Steve Job’s original claim that the 30% commission was to cover the costs of operating the store....

After removing Parler from the App Store back in January, Apple has reportedly decided to allow the app to come back. According to a new report from CNN, Apple has approved Parler’s latest attempt to return to the App Store follow improvements to the moderation system… In January, Apple had given Parler 24 hours’ notice to implement a content moderation system or else face removal from the App Store. The company resisted and therefore the app was removed as Apple had promised....

There was surprise expressed when Apple quietly dropped its annual 12 Days of Christmas promotion this past year, just one year after it first reached the US. The app provided a free digital gift–which could be a song, app, book, TV show or movie–for each of 12 days, starting on December 26th. A number of our readers noticed that it has now apparently done the same with the Single of the Week, which has offered a free music track on iTunes every week since 2004....

Apple CEO Tim Cook pulled in a total of $9.2M during Apple’s fiscal 2014, over double his 2013 earnings, according to numbers in Apple’s just released proxy statement. The filing details executive compensation and new board member nominations, among other items of business, ahead of Apple’s upcoming annual shareholders meeting. According to the report, Apple CEO Time Cook made a total of $9.2 million during the year including $1.7 million in salary and the rest in additional forms of compensation....

Wall Street analysts as well as their unaffiliated colleagues polled by Fortune’s spreadsheet wizard Philip Elmer-DeWitt are modelling up to 19 million iPhones in the first calendar quarter, Apple’s second fiscal quarter. The estimates range from as low as 13.24 million units (Goldman Sachs’ Bill Schope) to an astounding 19.80 million iPhones (Jeff Fidacaro of Susquehanna). Apple sold 16.24 million iPhones in the lucrative holiday quarter and 8.75 million units in the year-ago quarter....

In the recent past, customers who purchased an iPhone directly from the Apple Online Store and in Apple Retail Stores have had 30 days to return the device for any reason. The only stipulation was that it had to be undamaged and include all of the original accessories. According to an internal document provided by one of our retail sources, Apple plans to change its iPhone return policy to just 14 days beginning on March 13th....

Apple has issued a reminder of the earnings call for its fiscal Q1 2017 (calendar Q4 2016) financial report. As usual, there will be a live audio webcast of the call. The big question is whether the launch of the iPhone 7/Plus and the holiday quarter will see a return to growth for the company after three straight quarters of year-on-year decline in sales. Apple’s own guidance suggests it’s expecting good news, while analyst sentiment appears to be mixed …...
