A Texas jury has ordered Apple to pay out just under $533 million in a patent infringement case brought by Smartflash LLC regarding technology that the company said iTunes used without permission. Apple had attempted to argue that the patents were invalid. The court ruled in Smartflash’s favor, but chose not to award the entire $852 million the software maker was seeking. The patents in question were related to “data storage and managing access through payment systems,” according to Bloomberg....

Apple is opening its doors to nearby residents with an open house scheduled for December 14 at Apple Park that includes a Toys for Tots holiday drive. Spotted by Eddie Kuo, Apple started sending out the invites for the Neighborhood Open House at Apple Park with the note: Thank you for your support of our new campus. Last night Apple pulled the Developer Center offline for maintenance, but as is usually the case, no noticeable changes were visible when it came back up. As it turns out, the company was patching a very serious security breach that was discovered over the weekend, allowing anyone to access the personal contact information for every registered iOS, Mac, or Safari developer; every Apple Retail and corporate employee; and some key partners....

During Apple’s most recent earnings call in October, Tim Cook teased that Apple Card would soon be adding 0% financing for iPhone purchases. Ahead of that feature rolling out, Apple has updated the Wallet app on iOS to reference this new monthly installment option. On the earnings call in October, Cook explained that Apple Card users will be able to finance iPhone purchases over 24 months with 0% interest. You’ll also still get 3% Daily Cash on your total iPhone purchase....

Earlier this year AOL announced it would no longer be supporting iCloud email accounts with its Alto webmail service after December 2nd. Today, however, the Alto team informed users it had reversed that decision and apologized for the confusion of its decision. Alto also promised it would not be pulling support for iCloud email in the future, but offered no details on why the initial decision then reversal were made. Full email below:...

Amid continued tension between the United States and China, a new report from The Information details how Apple could be impacted by Chinese retaliation. Apple also continues to face pushback from Chinese regulators in regards to the App Store. In the United States, the Trump Administration is threatening action against Chinese-owned TikTok and WeChat due to national security concerns. Because of this, the report explains that there is a “growing risk of a tit-for-tat” response on United States businesses in China....

As noted by MacStories, Apple will be adding a new Food and Drink category to the iTunes App Store. According to Apple’s email to select developers, the new category will go live in “the next few weeks.” The new app section will cover a slew of food related apps, but not shopping, dieting, or food-related games. Restaurant and bar finding apps, recipe apps, cooking and baking apps will be supported, though, per Apple’s email....

A software update for the iPhone will enable the feature, but users will also need to use a third-party app. Apple announced that Stripe will be the first payment platform to work with Tap to Pay for iPhone through the Shopify Point of Sale app this spring. Apple also noted that other payment processors and apps will follow later this year. To be clear, Tap to Pay for iPhone isn’t limited to only accepting payments from other iPhone users....

Although Apple says that they will begin selling unlocked, contract-free iPhone 4S units in the United States in November, we have learned otherwise. Select Apple Stores in the United States have begun selling contract-free versions of the iPhone 4S, which our friend Steven Troughton-Smith was able to both verify and purchase. Users can activate the contract-free iPhone 4S by simply plugging the device into iTunes. Once plugged in, the above iPhone 4S unlocked popup will appear....

Another interesting discovery related to the Contacts app in iOS 5. You can now, if you want, add ‘related people’ to your contact cards. The Related People field is disabled by default so you add it first by tapping the Add Field option in the contact card editing interface. Choosing Related People at the bottom lets you pick among a dozen pre-populated labels such as mother, father, parent, brother, sister, child, friend, spouse, partner, assistant, manager and other....

The rumors about Apple making its own EV shot back onto the scene last week with a report from Reuters about production possibly starting by 2024. Sources have said that Apple has a breakthrough monocell battery in the works and more. However, reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is out with a special note on Apple Car that says the market is “too bullish about Apple Car” and that 2025 would be the very earliest we could see the vehicle launch and says realistically, 2028 or later is possible....

Apple has responded to claims that a hacker group obtained access to more than 600 million iCloud accounts. In a statement to Fortune, Apple said that there have not been any breaches to its systems and that its user data is safe. Apple says that the data hackers claim to have appears to be from “previously compromised third-party services.” The full statement from Apple is below: Additionally, Apple explained that it will continue to “actively monitor” the situation and work with law enforcement to ensure that user data remains safe....

Apple has today opened up a new online store for active military personnel and veterans to make purchasing its products at a discount more accessible. Different from its education pricing, eligible military customers will receive 10% off Apple products, and the new discounted pricing even includes iPhones, Apple Watch, accessories, and more. Apple previously offered active military and veteran discounts in Apple Stores, but didn’t have a dedicated online store. It also mirrored the discounted education pricing, which meant no deals on products like iPhone, Apple Watch, Apple TV, accessories, and much more....

Apple engineers visited the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired earlier this week where the company leads its Everyone Can Code curriculum. According to Austin Satesman of Open Source, this was the first class Apple has led for blind and low-vision students. Using the built-in VoiceOver feature from iOS, students were able to complete assignments on the iPad’s Swift Playgrounds app. Students were also given the opportunity to go outside and fly Parrot drones using the Swift Playgrounds app....

Back in August, Apple decided to take legal action against a company called Prepear. Although the company has nothing to do with technology, it tried to register a pear-shaped logo — and of course, this bothered Apple. However, it seems that the two companies are coming to an agreement about that logo. Prepear is a spin-off of the Super Healthy Kids service and it offers healthy recipes and a digital grocery list through a mobile app....

Apple currently uses LCD display technology for all of its iPhones but this appears to be changing next year with the rumored radically-new iPhone in 2017, following the iPhone 7’s smaller, iterative, design changes. Many reports have said that the next-generation iPhones, dubbed ‘iPhone 8’, will feature OLED displays for the first time. More indicators for this has come to light today with Bloomberg reporting that Apple is negotiating with Sharp to produce OLED panels for its phones....

Apple News+ launched in the UK yesterday, more than six months after it did so in the US. I hadn’t been too impressed by the free offerings in Apple News and had actually removed the app from both my iPhone and iPad, but Apple News+ in the UK gave me a chance to re-evaluate it with its boosted content… The name Apple News has always been somewhat misleading. What you get in reality are some newspapers and lots of magazines....

A survey taken of Anthem players paints a rather dire and disappointing picture for the BioWare MMORPG. At first, the game seemed promising. When BioWare released the first gameplay footage of Anthem in 2017, many players felt it had a bright future. However, just before the release of the title, things started to go awry.
