A blog post by supplier-sourcing company Panjiva (via GigaOM) is being cited as evidence that Apple plans to launch a refreshed Apple TV alongside the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C at its media event on September 10th. While it’s possible that the timing aligns with plans to have a new model in stock this month, and a refresh is somewhat overdue, it’s rather thin evidence on which to base this assumption: it’s equally possible that this is merely a routine shipment of existing stock....

Over the last few days, Apple has started to heavily tout its contributions to the United States economy. During the company’s earnings call yesterday and again during an interview today, Tim Cook talked up Apple’s influence, and now Apple has launched a new website that breaks down its United States economic outreach… On the website, Apple describes its contributions to the United States economy. For instance, the company touts that it has created some 2 million jobs, 450,000 of which are through its United States-based suppliers....

In a recent update to its supplier responsibility pages, Apple has listed Quanta Computer USA as a final assembler of its Macs. One of the locations of Quanta’s final assembly is 44350 Nobel Drive Fremont, Calif., indicating that some Macs are or will be built in the facility. These are facilities where Apple products are assembled and packaged for distribution. . Apple CEO Tim Cook noted in an interview with NBC’s Brian Williams late last year that Apple would invest $100 million to move at least one of its product lines to the United States....

Alongside its announcement of Apple’s quarterly earnings, its first revenue decline since 2003, Apple has also announced latest numbers for Apple Music, its $9.99 per month streaming music service. The company says it now has 13 million paying subscribers, up from 11 million in February. This compares to about 30 million subscribers to leading competitor Spotify, although the service obviously had a multi-year headstart over Apple’s streaming service, which launched last June....

Apple has named the top 25 apps infected by the XcodeGhost malware, stating that “the number of impacted users drops significantly” for other compromised apps. Most security researchers now agree that the total number of infected apps is in or around four figures, with many of them still present in China’s App Store … Apple states that it is working with developers to get clean versions of the apps back into the App Store, with eight of the most popular apps not yet restored, including Angry Birds 2 and China Unicom’s Customer Service app....

The Loop’s Dave Mark yesterday spotted a video that has so far flown under the radar: an Apple Park Spaceship campus video tour that takes us into the non-public areas… You can visit the on-campus Apple Store, and some people get invited to events in the Steve Jobs Theater, but the spaceship ring itself is normally strictly off-limits to visitors. However, travel videographer Yongsung Kim somehow managed it, filming everything from his drive into the underground parking lot to a walk, a tour of the Theater, then through a section of the main ring and inner grounds....

The Nest smoke detector may look decidedly old-fashioned if one Apple patent ever makes it into production. Apple has patented the idea of embedding smoke detectors into “electronic devices” and using those devices to provide a comprehensive response to a fire. In other words, your Apple Watch, iPhone, iPad or Mac could detect smoke, alert you, alert other devices within range, activate sprinklers, call emergency services and use the fact that an iDevice is moving or in use to tell fire crews where in the building you and your family members are … In response to detecting smoke with the smoke detector, the electronic device may issue an alert or take other suitable action....

Apple today launched the America’s Food Fund, hosted on GoFundMe, along with partners including Leonardo DiCaprio, Laurene Powell Jobs, and the Ford Foundation. The project aims to support food access for vulnerable people across the United States. The donations will go towards the World Central Kitchen and Feeding America nonprofit organizations. Apple has officially acknowledged an issue reported by multiple iPad Pro owners on Reddit and Apple’s own support forum, in which some units become unresponsive after charging. We’ve even happened upon a few dead iPad Pros at the Apple Store for which an Apple employee shyly asked us to avert our eyes while he did a hard restart. Some users report that the device won’t wake after charging, while others who left it switched on say that the Pro fails to respond to either the touchscreen or the home button....

Apple has reportedly bought Israel-based camera technology firm LinX Computational Imaging Ltd, The Wall Street Journal reports. According to the report, the acquisition may have been for an estimated $20 million. LinX specializes in producing “miniature multi-aperture cameras designed for mobile devices.” Apple’s motivation for purchasing the firm would clearly be to improve the camera technology on mobile devices including the iPhone. Specifically, LinX’s camera technology aims to achieve SLR-level quality photography from a mobile device using a system of multiple lenses rather than relying on a single, extended lens....

Apple has announced its latest quarter results including $45.4b in revenue and $8.72 profit from 41m iPhones, 11.4m iPads, and 4.29m Macs sold. FY17 Q3 results compare to the previous quarter’s $52.9 billion in revenue, $11.03 billion in profit, 50.7 million iPhones, 8.92 million iPads, and 4.19 million Macs. In the same quarter a year ago, Apple reported $42.4 billion in revenue, $7.8 billion in profit, 40.4 millions iPhones sold, 9....

Apple regularly stops signing older versions of iOS to ensures users stay on the most up-to-date builds for security and stability reasons. Apple’s WWDC event kicks off on Monday, but App Store head Phil Schiller is already sharing some major changes coming to the App Store that will impact developers. Late last week Apple announced its iPhone event for next Wednesday, September 12 at 10 AM PT. We are expecting three new iPhones, an updated Apple Watch with all-new design, and more. Apple announced today the deadline for developers’ sandboxing their Mac App Store apps was extended from March 1 to June. The restriction coupled with the introduction of Apple’s Gatekeeper feature in Mountain Lion, which automatically prevents apps not signed by Apple recognized developers from running in 10.8, creates a much more controlled ecosystem for apps on OS X. Of course, Gatekeeper can at this point be easily bypassed to run non-Apple approved apps, and sandboxing is simply meant to limit an application’s control within the OS to prevent malicious activity....

A Seattle-based law firm is preparing to file a class action lawsuit against Apple over iOS updates bricking iPhones whose home buttons have been repaired or replaced by third-party companies. The Guardian reports that lawyers PCVA are inviting those who have experienced the ‘Error 53’ problem to contact them. A London-based lawyer also believes that the issue may place Apple in breach of consumer law in the UK … Apple says that the issue is a security feature designed to ensure that Touch ID cannot be compromised....
