The US Patent & Trademark Office has today published an Apple patent application for a foldable display. This follows earlier rumors that the company was working with LG on a future foldable iPhone. The patent describes a display that can be ‘opened and closed like a book’ … The first report of Apple working on a foldable display dates back almost a year, when it was said to be one of several companies partnering with LG....

Yesterday, Apple released its first ever diversity report and a letter from CEO Tim Cook explaining Apple’s approach to diversity and inclusion and its importance at Apple. The report details several facts, including that 55% of Apple’s United States workforce is white and only 30% of the Apple workforce is female. Writing about the report, Cook said, “I’m not satisfied with the numbers on this page. They’re not new to us, and we’ve been working hard for quite some time to improve them....

Apple has posted its 10k filing with the SEC this afternoon that features a slew of numbers and new title changes. CFO Peter Oppenheimer has been named the Principal Accounting Officer, taking over Betsy Rafael. Additionally, Apple has named Scott Forstall ‘Special Advisor to CEO Tim Cook’ on his way out of the company at the end of this year. As for numbers, Apple says it has expanded its research and development section by $1 billion, has 72,800 full-time employees on staff (up 12,400 from last year), added 33 new retail stores this year, has 17....

Apple today announced its plan to bring UIKit to the Mac. This is a multi-year project. Apple is testing the new cross-platform frameworks with its own stock apps in macOS Mojave. It will be available to third-party developers in 2019. Apple is extending the iOS interface frameworks to work well on the Mac windowing system. It specifically said that it will not be merging iOS and macOS. The frameworks are in internal testing with Apple this year, and developers will learn about how to start using them for their apps next year....

According to the Financial Times, Apple is in late-stage talks with Beats to acquire the music streaming and headphone maker for a deal worth $3.2 billion. The deal could be announced as soon as next week, according to the report. The report adds the senior management from Beats will report directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook. The Beats headphone brand has been marketed by artist Dr. Dre for several years, and the company most recently launched a cross-platform streaming music service that has seen some success....

The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple has joined Microsoft, Twitter, Google, Yahoo!, Facebook, and other giants in the tech industry in calling for a reform of the NSA’s surveillance tactics. Earlier this year it was revealed that the National Security Agency was using information from these companies and more to monitor citizens across the nation without warrants. The companies allegedly involved in the “PRISM” program denied turning over any user data to the government, but a leaked NSA slidedeck (seen above) seemed to imply the opposite....

Let the deluge begin… Not long after the Super Mario Run iMessage sticker pack was made available to iOS 10 users, Apple has unleashed the entire iMessage App Store. The iMessage App Store, which is available for iOS 10 users, features sticker packs from companies like Disney, Bandai Namco, Sanrio, and others. In addition to the sticker packs, the iMessage App Store features full-fledged iMessage apps and games. Several of the apps that were demonstrated during the WWDC 2016 keynote are here, such as Square Cash, OpenTable, and JibJab....

Developer James Thomson of popular calculator app PCalc announced today via his Twitter account that Apple is forcing him to remove the app’s Today Widget due to a restriction that iOS widgets “cannot perform any calculations.” Apple’s new Today Widgets feature in iOS 8, which allows developers to build functions into the system-wide Notification Center, does have some limitations that Apple outlines in developer documentation. For example, Apple encourages developers not to use Today Widgets for multistep tasks: “If you want to create an app extension that enables a multistep task or helps users perform a lengthy task, such as uploading or downloading content, the Today extension point is not the right choice....

Apple has been awarded the Green Supply Chain CITI Outstanding Brand title in China, the company announced today. As part of receiving this award, Apple will work to help further “promote environmental management.” Apple made the announcement in a post on its China Newsroom today. The award comes after Apple consistently ranked first in the Corporate Information Transparency Index (CITI) over the last five years. The award is meant to recognize Apple’s “environmental leadership across the entire supply chain....

Today in Japan, Apple previewed the upcoming grand opening of their newest retail store. Located in the city of Kyoto, the store will be the company’s 504th location worldwide and ninth operating in Japan. Kyoto’s Shijo Street is a commercial and retail center, home to many luxury shops and retailers including the upscale Daimaru department store. Steps from Daimaru is Kyoto’s Zero Gate, a branch of the shopping complex chain owned by retailer Parco....

Apple today announced that it is expanding its “Everyone Can Code” intititave to a new round of universities around the world. In a press release, the company revealed that the program is now available at more than 20 new colleges and universities, including Australia’s RMIT… The new schools will now offer the App Development with Swift Curriculum, which is a full-year course designed from the ground up by Apple engineers and educators....

Apple may have outsourced Black Friday discounts on its products to other retailers this year, but it’s not staying completely out of the promotion game during the Christmas shopping season. Starting today Apple is bundling $60 gift cards that can be used toward Apple Music memberships with almost all Beats headphones and speakers purchased from Apple for a limited time. The promotion specifically pushes Apple Music memberships as it can pay for almost 6 months of access, but the $60 credit can be used toward iTunes, iBooks, and App Store, and Mac App Store purchases and subscriptions as well....

The legal battle between Apple and Qualcomm is expected to gain momentum next month, when the trial begins in San Diego. A new filing reveals that the trial will include testimony by both Apple CEO Tim Cook, as well as Qualcomm CEO Steven Mollenkopf. Bloomberg was first to report on the joint witness list filing. According to the documents, Cook will testify on Apple’s business strategy and financial performance, as well as the agreements Apple has in place with other technology companies....

Apple has launched a new way for users in the United States to more easily disable Activation Lock on their device. As first spotted by users on Reddit, there is now a dedicated webpage on Apple’s website for managing Activation Lock requests. Mountain Lion will cater to Chinese users more than any other OS X version. CEO Tim Cook once more underscored the importance of China by highlighting Mac sales in today’s interview with the Wall Street Journal. Sales doubled in the 1.33 billion-people market during 2011 to the tune of $13 billion in revenue. “They know about Apple and what Apple stands for. Then they search out and look for the Mac”, he told the paper....

Apple’s industrial design team is undergoing a series of changes, a new report from The Wall Street Journal claims. According to the report, several Apple veterans are departing the team, which consists of roughly two-dozen people led by Jony Ive. Rico Zorkendorfer and Daniele De Iuliis have been at Apple for a combined total of 35 years, but have recently decided to leave the company and the iconic industrial design team....

Apple is looking to spur the growth of its subscription news service Apple News+. The company has announced a new affiliate program for Apple News+, which pays out a bounty of 400% per conversion. The Apple Affiliate program has a complicated history. In 2018, Apple removed App Store purchases and in-app purchases from the program completely. Since then, it has focused on Apple Music, Apple TV, and Apple Books. The new Apple News+ affiliate program is another step in this direction....
