Apple is featuring apps from WWDC 2018 scholarship winners in a special editorial piece in the Today tab of the iOS 11 App Store. It’s a cool gesture that gives some exposure to apps from upcoming developers. The feature highlights scholarship winners from various regions, with a list of names and links to their apps already on the App Store. There are usually a couple hundred scholarship places given out at each WWDC, and this list only includes about twenty names....

Update: Apple has seeded a new beta to public beta testers today, well. Apple has released iOS 10 beta 5 for developers to test on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. While Apple won’t release the operating system to the public until next month, the company is releasing regular betas to improve the software. In addition to iOS 10 beta 5, Apple has also pushed watchOS 3 beta 5 to developers....

Alongside the return of its Hour of Code classes, Apple is launching an all-new Entrepreneur Camp that is focused on creating new opportunities based on app-driven businesses owned or led by women. A first-of-its-kind, Apple is looking to aid app-driven businesses who are founded, co-founded or led by women that have a working app or prototype. The program will begin in January of 2019, but will begin accepting applications now....

Apple last month revealed its 2020 Apple Music award winners, and it has been uploading extended videos of each of the artists to its official YouTube channel over the past few days … The winning artists give their reactions to winning, followed by performances of a number of their tracks. The latest addition is a 13-minute video of Lil Baby, talking about his home town before performances of Humble, Low Down, Social Distancing, Get Money, Gang Signs, and Solid....

Apple this week appears to have started uploading full “replays” of Beats 1 shows to its Connect social network. Apple Music hosts including Zane Lowe, Julie Adenuga, and Ebro Darden have all shared full, unedited replays of their shows on their respective Connect pages over the past two days. This process appears to have started yesterday, without any official announcement by Apple. Prior to uploading full replays, each host would share a playlist with every song that was played during their show....

After several months of rumors, Apple today has officially unveiled its next-generation Apple Watch with support for LTE connectivity. The announcement was made on stage during the company’s special event today by CFO Jeff Williams following a moving video of Apple Watch users sharing their stories. The new model is called Apple Watch Series 3…. Tim Cook touted that Apple Watch is now the number one watch in the world, overtaking previous leader Rolex....

Find My iPhone is a great feature to have if you’ve ever realised you’ve misplaced your iPhone. You can not only track the device, but also post a message on the Lock screen asking a finder to contact you … But none of that helps if you haven’t yet realized your phone is missing. That’s the scenario Apple aims to cover in a new patent granted today. Anyone finding the phone would see an option to call a contact, which would be someone you’ve chosen as the person you’d like to be notified if someone finds your device....

Apple has reportedly acquired Platoon, a London-based music startup co-founded by iTunes veteran Denzyl Feigelson and LoveFilm co-founder Saul Klein. The acquisition is likely to allow Apple Music to tap emerging artists … Music Business Worldwide reports that the company has helped develop a number of big-name artists in its two short years of operation. Feigelson worked with Apple for more than 15 years, with responsibility for artist relations and live events – including producing the iTunes Festival in London....

As part of iOS 11, Apple is announcing a handful of improvements to Apple Music and AirPlay. Headlining the changes is Apple’s new AirPlay 2 protocol, while the Music app is also receiving improvements with new social features and more. With AirPlay 2, Apple is adding speaker control to the Home app. This means that users will be able to control speakers and manage multi-room audio directly from the Home app on their iOS device....

Apple has just announced that preorders for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have topped all previously set records, achieving 4 million sales in the first twenty-four hours. In the press release, Cook said he is thrilled that customers love them “as much as we do”. The issues with Apple’s online sales system do not seem to have deterred interested shoppers. Although the iPhone 5s did not have preorders at all last year, for comparison, Apple sold 9 million iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c’s in their opening weekend....

Until today, the only way to get a premium Apple Watch Hermès band was to buy the band and watch together from the Apple Store, or buy a very-similar (and cheaper) knockoff band and pretend it is genuine. It was also only offered in one color, fauve brown. That is all about to change however. Apple has announced that it will soon start selling Apple Watch Hermès bands standalone and in several new colors....

Apple has been promoting its device trade-in program quite a bit this year after rebranding it as “GiveBack” in April. Now, Apple is giving customers up to an extra $100 on top of normal trade-in values when picking up a new iPhone XS or XR. Ahead of its iPhone XS and XR event, Apple updated its GiveBack trade-in program to let customers get an instant credit, even with online purchases. In September, Apple offered competitive trade-in values for devices when the 2018 iPhone lineup launched, giving up to $525 for the iPhone X....

On Electrek today, we reported that Tesla’s battery research partner announced that they managed to double the lifetime of the batteries in Tesla’s products 4 years ahead of time. They achieved that through a new method to test battery cell longevity and we now learn that Apple also bought the same machines developed through the method. Jeff Dahn is a renowned battery researcher credited for several inventions that led to the succesful early development of li-ion cells, which is now the battery of choice for personal electronics and electric vehicles....

Apple business and education customers using the Device Enrollment Program (DEP) or Volume Purchase Program (VPP) will need to upgrade to a new program no later than the end of November … Apple is replacing them with new Apple School Manager and Apple Business Manager systems, and deprecating the existing services on December 1 of this year. It has issued almost identical notices for each. The business version directs users to business....

Apple’s WWDC festivities are officially about to kick off at 10 a.m. PST (1 p.m. EST) with the company’s keynote presentation, but it appears to already be hinting at car related announcements with several sports cars, classic cars and other vehicles displayed around the Moscone West venue. Apple officially launched CarPlay, an iPhone feature that enables an iOS-like interface on in-car touchscreen systems, earlier this year after first unveiling the feature at WWDC last year....

After announcing its $100 million Racial Equity and Justice Initiative last month, Apple has today announced that it is expanding its education partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Notably, the learning opportunities and workforce development will go beyond the newly added campuses and impact local communities as well. Bet you forgot about ol’ Apple Expo Paris didn’t you? Well, from September 25-29th, 2007, Paris will be LE place to be for Apple aficionados the world over. The Fall event is held at a perfect time for a European iPhone announcements in front of the home crowd – a month ahead of the release. Additionally, the Eurocentric crowd will likely get their own version of country-specific television shows on iTunes and an expanding iTunes Movies coverage....

Today the US Patent and Trademark Office posted 20 new patents granted to Apple Inc, two of which are valuable patents related to the iPhone, iPad, and iOS. Patents like these have been becoming more important as mobile device manufacturers take each other to court. According a report from Patently Apple, the three most noteworthy of the patents include one for integrated touch screen technology that allows the display to be “thinner, brighter and require less power” and require less parts to manufacture, another is related to the “Voicemail Manager” for iPhone, and the last appears to be related to “improved installation, retention and removal of hardware components” in Mac Pro or other tower-like personal computers....

Apple was granted 37 patents today, notably receiving approval for AirPower’s primary selling point, “multi-device charging.” The company was also granted a patent related to an iPhone with a full-body display spanning the front through rear and sides. The latter patent details having touch-sensitive input capabilities on the rear glass, with the patent specifying users could turn pages, scroll, and game while utilizing the rear input. The same patent further covers detecting device tilt, with “scroll speed proportionate to tilt angle” when viewing content while “detect absence of tilt and halt scrolling” would offer when the device was steady....

Apple today launched a new page on its official website that highlights carrier offers for customers who are buying a new iPhone 12 model. The company shows some of the trade-in deals currently available from US carriers for iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Called “iPhone Carrier Offers,” the new page found within the existing iPhone page on Apple’s website features deals from AT&T, T-Mobile/Sprint, and Verizon....
