Apple released the beta of iOS 5.0.1 to developers. It fixes the battery drain iOS users have reported. The response from developers using it has been largely positive too, with reports claiming it does have noticeably better battery life. On Wednesday Apple said that “A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices. We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks.” Of course, a “small amount” of iPhone users could still be in the hundreds or thousands given the success iPhone 4S has seen. Apple iOS 5.0.1 won’t only contain a fix for the battery drain issue, though. Apple says it also will fix the recent iPad 2 Smart Cover security hole, will add multitasking gestures for the original iPad, resolves some small “Documents in the Cloud” issues, and improves voice recognition in Siri for Australian users. Since this incremental update is still a beta, it’s worth noting these features are subject to change before its final release. With iOS 5.0.1 still a few weeks out, it’s worth adjusting your settings to save battery in the mean time. Check out our guide to get more out of your battery. These tips will extend the life of your idevice even after the update is officially released. Another interesting note is RedSn0w has already jailbroken iOS 5.0.1. And so it goes.
