Apple has added Divya Nag, a rising star in the medical device community, to its in-house medical technology team, according to sources with knowledge of the hire. Nag made her entry into the medical technology world earlier this decade by co-founding Stem Cell Theranostics, a company that focuses on technologies for testing new medicines for the market and how the drugs will affect patients. Nag also participated in the Stanford-based StartX, an “accelerator” for medical technology-focused startups....

We learned last month that Apple is discontinuing its long-time printing service that is integrated into Photos and previously iPhoto. Now, Apple is notifying users of the change via email and recommending some alternatives. Just after hearing about the printing service’s end, RR Donnelley came forward and shared that it has been Apple’s partner in providing the first-party printing service. Additionally, the company said that it would be launching Motif, a Photos extension to offer users a comparable experience and product lineup....

In 2020, big businesses and institutions really started jumping into Bitcoin. Now Tesla has invested $1.5 billion into the cryptocurrency and is working on plans to let customers pay with it when buying its EVs. After first unveiling the completely redesigned Mac Pro at WWDC earlier this year, Apple today gave the new machine a bit of stage time at its iPad event to announce pricing and availability details. The base model of the new Mac Pro (pictured above) will start at $2999 and ship by the end of the year. While Apple will presumably have several configurations and built to order options available for the next-gen Mac Pro– including Quad 6, 8, or 12-core designs– it only announced base pricing for the configuration above....

All current signs point to an iMac refresh sometime next week. The rumors started a few weeks ago when an unsourced report claimed that refreshed iMacs are en route to the United States for a late April or early May launch. Then, just last week, our sources across the globe backed up these claims, saying that iMac shipments and components are very constrained. Yesterday, our colleague Mr. X told us to expect new iMacs the week of May 2nd as Apple will officially stop shipping iMacs to resellers this week (week of April 25th)....

Apple is working with AT&T and Google parent-company Alphabet to enable emergency LTE in Puerto Rico after the island was devastated by Hurricane Maria last month. TechCrunch reports that Apple is issuing a carrier update this week using the service enable LTE Band 8 support. As 9to5Google reported earlier today, this emergency LTE is enabled by Alphabet’s X division using Project Loon. Project Loon deploys balloons from Nevada to Puerto Rico where cell towers have been destroyed to restore cellular service to areas without coverage....

Last year, it was reported that Apple was working to open an Apple Store in Washington D.C.’s famous Carnegie Library. While some details were known about the store, Apple was still in the process of obtaining permission from the appropriate parties. Today, however, Apple has been given the final go ahead for its Carnegie Library retail location… In a press release this afternoon, Events D.C., the “official convention and sports authority for the District of Columbia,” announced that its board of directors has come to an agreement with Apple for the Carnegie Library retail location and will execute the lease....

As we detailed a few weeks ago, there’s plenty of evidence to suggest Apple might be planning a spring media event. Now, a report from German iPhone rumors site iPhone-Ticker suggests Apple is planning a special event for the end of March. The report cites sources directly related to Apple and says that the event “will take place at the end of March.” The most likely date suggested by the report is Tuesday, March 31....

Last week, it was reported that Drake’s latest project was streamed 89.9 million times in its first 24 hours of availability on Apple Music, a number that bested Spotify by nearly 30 million despite Spotify’s larger user base. Apple has officially filed its mandatory response to the court following an order to comply with the FBI’s request to unlock an iPhone used by the San Bernardino shooter from December. Unsurprisingly, Apple has filed a motion to vacate the order which would force it to comply, telling the court that it shouldn’t have to unlock the iPhone using a modified and insecure software version. In the response, Apple has referred to the version of iOS that it would need to create to allow the FBI to unlock the iPhone in question using brute force as a Government Operating System, specifically GovtOS....

Apple has just debuted a revamped version of its website with a focus on all-new product pages. As part of the redesign, the Apple Online Store has been removed from the site’s main navigation bar, with the option to buy each product now available exclusively on the product’s page. The home page remains mostly unchanged, still featuring a scrolling marquee of product promos and four images at the bottom to highlight iOS 9 and some marketing campaigns, but the rest of the site is completely new....

Apple’s US online store today began accepting orders for the unlocked iPhone 4S, priced at $649/$749/$849 for the 16/32/64GB version, making good on its promise to provide the unlocked handset in November. The company advises: An unlocked iPhone 4S is of particular interest to those traveling abroad as they can just pop in a local carrier’s SIM card to avoid paying exorbitant roaming fees. Meanwhile, carrier Sprint today begun SIM-locking all iPhone 4S devices purchased Friday, November 11, 2011 and onwards, SprintFeed noted....

Apple and AT&T have been hit with the first class action lawsuit regarding the iPhone 4 antenna problem, with a filing in the United States District Court for the District of Maryland demanding trial by jury. Reuters is reporting that Apple, Microsoft, Ford, General Electric, IBM and other companies are forming a lobbyist group called the ‘Partnership for American Innovation’. The group is worried that upcoming legislation focused on patent trolls may adversely affect true ‘innovators’ as well. The legislation is targeted at fighting patent assertion entities (PAEs), companies commonly referred to as patent trolls. These companies buy up patents but produce no actual products themselves, instead looking to exhort license fees and royalties from other companies....

During his current tour to various locales abroad to accompany the launch of iPad Pro this week, Apple CEO Tim Cook stopped by Università Bocconi in Italy to deliver an inspiring speech to students. Another week, another problem. Following an Apple Music and iTunes outage last week, Apple confirmed on Tuesday that some of its services are now partially offline. This includes Find My, iCloud Mail, iCloud Contacts, and iCloud settings. Update (9:19 PM ET): Apple says the outage is now fixed across all its services. According to Apple, the issues started around 2 p.m. ET. However, the company didn’t provide a timeframe to fix the outage in iCloud services....
