Apple Maps has been down for many hours today, causing mayhem for customers seemingly worldwide. Whilst Apple’s system status reports no issues, users across Twitter and Apple Support forums are finding that is currently impossible to search for locations or get directions. The map tiles appear to be loading normally, but points of interest and critical functions of the app are simply not working. Update: Apple has now confirmed the issue on its support site, noting that ‘all users are affected’ by maps navigation and search issues....

Re/code reports today that Apple has chosen longtime Apple PR deputy Steve Dowling to lead Apple’s public relations efforts as interim PR chief. The report notes that Dowling’s role as head of Apple PR is not yet permanent as Apple continues to look for candidates outside of the company. Apple today added two new accessories for Apple Watch that will make the wearable fit wrists as large as 245mm. The first accessory, simply called Link Bracelet Kit, costs $49 from Apple and includes six additional links to expand the Link Bracelet to fit wrists as large as 245mm. Apple also today introduced a new Sport band size in L/XL that also fits up to 245mm wrists. Previously, the Sport band only extended to 210mm....
AirTags can be attached to any item in order to track it using the Find My app. Earlier this month, Apple also announced the initial set of third-party products that will be integrated into the app. AirTags include UWB functionality called “Precision Finding,” which enables precise location when looking for a lost item nearby, including haptic feedback. As we’ve seen before, the pairing process for AirTags is very similar to that of AirPods: just bring an unpaired AirTag next to your iOS device in order to add it to your iCloud account....

Apple and U.S.-based wireless carrier AT&T have begun sending out $40 checks to buyers of the original iPad WiFi + 3G in the United States over a “bait-and-switch” regarding the device’s data plan. The backstory is that when Steve Jobs announced the 3G iPad in January 2010, he announced a deal with AT&T for a $30/month unlimited iPad data plan. When the 3G iPad launched in late April 2010, this plan was available, but AT&T eliminated the plan just about one month later in early June 2010....
Apple has expanded its list of HomeKit categories with a new entry: AirPlay 2 receivers. We’ve seen upcoming and currently available AirPlay 2 speakers including HomePod, Sonos, and Libratone on Apple’s HomeKit accessory list since Apple’s wireless audio streaming solution debuted earlier this year. The addition of AirPlay 2 receivers adds a new way to control audio with HomeKit, and receiver maker Denon is owning the category for now. AirPlay 2 receivers are great for audio experts who already own speakers they love and just want a solution for routing audio to the right place in the right format....
Apple has just invited several media outlets to a ‘Spring forward’ special event on Monday, March 9th. We’re sure to see a whole lot more of the Apple Watch at this event ahead of its April debut. During Apple’s earnings call this evening, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that the company has sold 20 million Apple TV boxes through the second quarter of 2014. Sharing this number is out of the ordinary for Apple, as it generally doesn’t break down specific sales for its set-top box like it does for other products. After raising aquatic-themed banners over the weekend in Macau, Apple has officially announced the grand opening date and time of its newest retail store, Apple Cotai Central. A new page appearing this afternoon on Apple’s website confirms that the store’s doors will open to customers on Friday, June 29th at 6:00 P.M. After releasing macOS Catalina Golden Master to developers, Apple today has launched Apple Arcade for Mac users running the latest version of its operating system. That comes ahead of the public release of macOS Catalina, expected to be officially released this month. Apple Arcade offers an entire catalog of games with a single $4.99 per month subscription that can be shared with up to six family members. According to Apple, there will be more than 100 games available by the end of the year, with more to come every month....
Apple Card is coming this summer, and we expect the new credit card from Apple to be supported in iOS 12.4. A report back in September suggested that Apple was planning to open its first ever retail store in South Korea, close to Samsung’s HQ in Seoul. Apple has today confirmed this to Reuters. In a statement to the Wall Street Journal, Apple has confirmed that its manufacturing partners in India have started domestic production of iPhone SE. Up to now, Apple produces almost all of its iPhones in China (although some older models have been assembled in Brazil). Presumably, the devices will bear an ‘Assembled in India’ label on the hardware. Apple is pushing hard into India as it looks for new markets to grow iPhone sales....
