Last year Apple patched iOS after cyber researchers from the UK demonstrated that a malicious webpage could use iPhone sensors to detect a passcode. The technique was so accurate that the team had a 100% success rate at working out 4-digit PINs within five attempts, reports Engadget. If Apple plans to offer artist exclusives as a way to encourage sign-ups to its rebranded Beats Music streaming service, it will be facing new competition. TechCrunch reports that Tidal, the high-definition music service being relaunched later today by new owner Jay Z, is set to announce some exclusive deals with big-name artists. The artists named in the report have all been using the #tidalforall hashtag in recent tweets and Instagram posts … Tidal’s plan of attack will be to ink first-window deals with the artists, where Tidal would get first releases of tracks from big-name artists ahead of any other digital streaming services....

Apple CEO Tim Cook today posted an open letter on Apple’s website that addresses the recent protests and riots fuelled by the death of George Floyd under police arrest, described by Cook as a “senseless killing”. Cook says that everyone must stand together and recognize the fear and outrage from recent events and the long history of racism. Earlier this week, whispers started arising that Apple was planning to hold its September 9th iPhone event at the Bill Graham Civic Center Auditorium in San Francisco. A UBS research note seen by Business Insider says that Apple is believed to have more than 1,000 engineers working on an augmented reality project, and that the company’s first AR offering may be seen in the iPhone 8. The note is consistent with a KGI one stating that the iPhone 8 will include a ‘revolutionary‘ camera able to sense 3D space … According to some industry sources, the company may have over 1,000 engineers working on a project in Israel that could be related to AR […] UBS expects Apple could implement new AR products as early as in the next iPhone, expected later this year, which could include “moderate 3D mapping … and possibly an AR software development kit,” the note says....

Apple has today expanded its lyric search feature in Apple Music to several new countries. This feature lets users search for songs within Apple Music by simply typing a portion of the lyrics.
