Last week, Apple said it would be updating iOS software (“bugs”) to only store a week’s worth of location data as well as allowing users to turn off the storing of location data. That update is coming in a few weeks according to BGR: The update will no longer back up the location database to iTunes. The size of the location database will be reduced. The location database will be deleted entirely when Location Services are turned off....

Via Reuters, Sharp may begin a $7 billion project to build a factory in the United States before June of this year. Apple supplier Foxconn announced plans to explore manufacturing components in the US earlier this year, and this latest report largely reaffirms those rumors with a more concrete time frame. A spring/summer start for the US plant would be sooner than many predicted. Sharp has supplied display components for Apple in the past and may be one of the OLED display suppliers for the iPhone 8....

After originally aiming to debut the new series in April, Apple quietly delayed its Carpool Karaoke show until “later this year” without reason. Apple expanded its recycling program in the United States in August to give customers an opportunity to —well— recycle their used iPhones and iPads for Apple gift cards, and now the technology giant is extending the program even further by launching a similar initiative in the United Kingdom, Germany and France. A Reuters report out of China mentiond that Apple had been speaking with the local carriers about connecting their local brand of LTE with the iPhone. There are some compatibilities and similarities between TD-LTE and the LTE that Verizon and AT&T are rolling out in the US. But does that mean Apple is going to build an iPhone 5 with any type of 4G LTE? I think it is unlikely. We do know, however, that Apple has been active in the hiring of LTE engineers over the past few months....

Apple’s VP of Apple Pay Jennifer Bailey today announced a new NFC feature for iPhone: special tags that trigger Apple Pay purchases when tapped, without the need to download a special app first. The company is partnering with Bird scooters, Bonobos clothing store, and PayByPhone parking meters for the initial rollout. Apple also announced that inside the Wallet app, users will soon be able to sign up for loyalty cards in one tap, presumably presented to users as recommendations when they make eligible purchases....

(Credit Quartz) Tim Cook has once again defended the iPad in the face of continued falling sales, arguing that the “underlying data” paints a more positive picture than the pure sales numbers, and predicting that there will be future iPad growth. As Quartz noted, the 23% year-on-year fall in iPad shipments to 12.6M means that iPad revenue actually dropped below Mac revenue for the second time since 2011. Cook again acknowledged that other Apple products cannibalize iPad sales, the iPhone 6 Plus a strong competitor on one side and the MacBook Air and new 12-inch MacBook on the other, but said that there were a number of reasons to be positive about the future of the iPad … First, he said, the partnership with IBM is still in its early stages, but is already showing great promise....
