Apple is today commemorating the life of boxer Muhammad Ali with a fullscreen homepage tribute, who died in hospital on Friday at the age of 74. The quote reads: ‘The man who has no imagination has no wings’. Apple executives Tim Cook and Phil Schiller have also shown their respects on Twitter. Ali directly represented Apple’s brand in the Think Different campaign. When Steve Jobs announced the video, it was as a metaphor for Apple fighting against Michael Dell, who famously stated that Apple was dead and the company should just return the remaining money to its shareholders....

In a report issued this morning, KGI’s Mingchi Kuo has listed predictions for the October 22nd event to be held at the Yerba Beuna center for the Arts. Clearly, iPads will be front and center, with the thinner, lighter iPad 5 headlining the event. Kuo predicts a slimmer iPad 5 with 20% lighter weight down to 7.5mm and 500g respectively. He also expects an 8 megapixel camera with a larger aperture on the order of the iPhone 5 and a new 64-bit A7X processor....

Apple’s tax struggles in Europe have been well documented in the past, and now an extensive audit has forced the company to pay an additional tax bill. As reported by The Financial Times, Apple is being forced to pay an extra £136 million tax bill in the U.K… The added tax comes following “an extensive audit” by HM Revenue and Customs, which is the department of the UK government responsible for the collection of taxes....

Apple’s latest hire to help in its push for original video content is BBC executive Jay Hunt, which is notable as it is the company’s first high-profile broadcasting executive hire outside of the US, Financial Times reports. That news comes today as a separate report details Apple’s reportedly not-so-edgy approach as it shops for content… The FT report adds that Hunt will start at Apple officially in January and be part of a team that will lead a $1B budget for original content video for the next 12 months....

Apple appears to be expecting roughly stable demand for the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Max, and iPhone 11R, set to be announced later this year. Bloomberg reports that Apple suppliers have been instructed to manufacture parts for about 75 million phones through the end of the year, approximately equal to Apple’s iPhone XS, XR, and XS Max sales for the same period last year. Of course, Apple doesn’t say anything about its production levels aside from total revenue forecasts....

So far, UK customers are receiving codes worth £50, bringing the price of a HomePod down to £269 direct from Apple. A £50 discount beats average eBay prices. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, President Barack Obama is set to announce a new program called “SupplierPay” to help boost small businesses, and Apple is one of the 26 companies listed as having already signed on. The program intends to send money down the supply chain and help strengthen contractors and smaller businesses by giving them access to lower-cost capital and thereby opening up opportunities for hiring more workers....

On its website, French fashions retailer Colette is teasing a ‘one day only experience’, taking place at its stores on September 30th. The event runs from store open to 7 pm local time (via MacGeneration). Other details are unknown. The invite image sort of resembles the Apple Watch home screen, so maybe this is some sort of special demonstration of the upcoming product. There is a possibility that Colette will sell the device in its store when the Watch is released ‘early next year’....

As it normally does in the lead up to earnings season, Apple today announced that it will hold its Q2 2017 earnings call on Tuesday, May 2nd. The call will be held at the standard time of 2PM PT/5PM ET, with the earnings release itself being sent out roughly thirty minutes before then. Apple announced the date on its Investor News Webpage. Apple’s Q2 earnings will follow a strong holiday quarter for the company that saw profits of $17....

Apple has announced on its website that its first retail store in Queens will open on Saturday 11th July at 1oam. We exclusively revealed that the store was on the way back in February, with the first construction shots seen later the same month and signage appearing in May. The new store is located on the second floor of the Queens Center mall in Elmhurst and will be one of the largest of the eight Apple Stores in New York … Apple Retail marketing director Jason Barlia told the NY Daily News that the location made a lot of sense, and that although the store won’t share the unique architecture for which many Apple Stores are known, it will be unique in the way it reflects the ethnic diversity of the neighbourhood....

Apple is ready to show the first fruits of its Beats acquisition next week. As we first reported in early March, Apple is planning to introduce its long-awaited Beats-based streaming music service at its Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday, June 8th. Blending Apple interface design and features from the Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine-created Beats Music app, Apple’s service, known internally as “Apple Music,” is built to take on Spotify and Pandora with several new features and a subscription model....

Analysts attending the Reuters Global Investment Outlook Summit in New York have suggested that Apple could eventually be valued at a trillion dollars. AAPL got two-thirds of the way there a few days ago, reaching $663B, since climbing further to $670B, and billionaire investor Carl Icahn suggested last month that the company should already be valued at a trillion dollars … Gains in shares of Apple Inc could take the world’s largest publicly traded company to a market capitalization of perhaps as high as $1 trillion, some of the country’s biggest investors said on Monday....

The report follows a fiscal Q4 report in October when the company lost $6 billion worth of sales to supply chain disruption, and warned at the time that Q1 would be worse. The report sent Apple shares almost 3% in late trading. CEO Tim Cook remarked that the “quarter’s record results were made possible by our most innovative lineup of products and services ever.” Added Cook, “We are gratified to see the response from customers around the world at a time when staying connected has never been more important....

Apple has extended its service coverage for Apple Watch (1st gen) models experiencing expanded/swollen battery problems to three years, covering customers for service for an additional two years beyond the complimentary 1-year Limited Warranty that it provides with the device. The issue with swollen and expanded batteries on first-gen Apple Watch models has been documented online by users experiencing the problem— here on Apple support forums, for example, and here on Reddit— but appears to not be widespread or something that has made mainstream media headlines....
