I wonder whether they read his CV or Googled him … ? I’m lucky enough to get my tech support from JK Scheinberg, the engineer at Apple who led the effort that moved the Mac to Intel processors. A little restless after retiring in 2008, at 54, he figured he’d be a great fit for a position at an Apple store Genius Bar, despite being twice as old as anyone else at the group interview....

Re/code via sources unknown says today that Apple has been considering the $400 price point for its wearable, expected to be announced on September 9th and available for sale in 2015. The price positioning is reminiscent of Apple’s latest product launch, the iPad, in which price points of $1,000 were batted around before Steve Jobs took the stage and conjured up the jaw-dropping $499 starting price point. But without knowing about the wearable product, how can we judge the price point…...

Apple has released a pair of new updates meant to fix video-locking issues on iMacs that run Lion and improve hardware compatibility when running Windows in dual boot mode on your Mac. The iMac Graphic FW Update 3.0 is now available for download, weighing in at a paltry 482KB. Apple says the firmware update “fixes a graphics issue that may cause an iMac to hang under certain conditions”. You can also download this update by choosing Software Update from the Apple menu, in which case the update mechanism will determine whether your iMac’s graphics card needs updating and offer the refreshed software appropriately....

If these internal documents jibe with what Apple will be soon releasing, Mac customers will be able to get their hands on a super-fast 16-core Mac. In addition to these specifications, we hear that Apple has already begun the process of assembling product manuals for the new Mac Pro, corroborating previous claims of a late July or early August launch. Our sources could not confirm if the new rack mountable design, which we detailed, will make its way into the 2011 model....

Last time we checked with research firm IDC, they listed Apple at 68.3-percent of the worldwide tablet market with approximately 9.3 million units of the iPad 2 shipped in quarter two of 2011. While the firm’s estimates for Q3 saw a drop to 61.5-percent of the market, Apple still leads the market and increased shipments from the 9.3 million in Q2 to approximately 11.1 million units in Q3. To put that in perspective, Apple’s closest competitor, Samsung, is over 10 times behind with just 5....

Apple was last year granted more than 2,000 patents, putting in around 10th place in a ranking of US companies. Two different organizations came up with slightly different numbers and rankings … The Intellectual Property Owners (IPO) association said that the number of patents granted to Apple in 2018 by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) was 2,147, ranking it #11. Apple has announced its next-generation iPhone XR, one of its three 2018 flagship iPhones. The iPhone XR is lower-cost than the iPhone XS whilst retaining the slim bezel, notched screen with Face ID and gestural navigation. Available in 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB, starting at $749. The iPhone XR has a bigger LCD display than the iPhone 8 Plus, Apple is calling it ‘Liquid Retina’ — although it is not as waterproof as iPhone Xs....

Tim Cook today touted that Apple has now sold over 1.2 billion iPhones, a milestone achieved in just a decade. The news was announced during Apple’s Q3 2017 earnings call and comes a year after Apple revealed it had sold 1 billion iPhones. In July of 2016, Apple confirmed that it had sold 1 billion iPhones to date, with Tim Cook touting the device as a one of the most ‘important, world-changing and successful products in history....

Apple has announced an expansion of its Apple Maps vehicle program, a fleet of vans equipped with advanced sensors collecting data for an improved Maps experience. Among the new locations, Apple will be bringing the vehicles to France and Sweden for the first time, while it also plans to survey a long list of new cities in the US and UK where it’s already started surveying. We first reported on the project back in May, noting that Apple was gathering data to reduce its reliance on third-parties, including getting Google Street View-type images of storefronts and other 3D imagery....

AFP reported Apple is in court in Shanghai, China again today, but this time it’s over a lawsuit alleging the company copied components of Siri’s speech recognition software. According to the report, Shanghai-based Zhizhen Network Technology Co. claimed in pretrial proceedings that Apple infringed its patent related to voice recognition technology via Siri. While the suit notes that development of Siri began in 2007, there is no mention of Nuance. Apple currently partners Nuance with to implement the speech recognition component in Siri, and it is also a market leader that presumably has its own arsenal of speech recognition related patents....

Wow! You really can tell you’ve made it when the competition start to trash talk you, and now we’re seeing the biggest compliment ever shot across at Apple, with Acer founder Stan Shih calling Apple’s products a “mutant virus”. Wow! I’m writing this story using a mutant virus. That’s amazing. Anyway, the upshot of these claims, made during a Digitimes interview yesterday: Shih says that Apple’s popularity is mainly due to the success of products such as the iPad and iPhone (I’d add iPod, but then I know what I’m talking about), and he calls these succesful products ‘mutant viruses’....

As found in some durability tests, the black iPhone 5’s back tends to scratch much easier than its glass-backed iPhone 4/4S predecessors. However, the aluminum back obviously stands up to drops much better than glass. When given the option, I would probably take the scratches. Any aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color. That is normal. In a press release, Apple has announced it is opening a new development office in Hyderabad, India. The team located here will apparently focus on improving Apple Maps, which is deeply integrated across Apple’s hardware and software as dedicated apps and embedded in other services, like Siri. The new center will create up to 4000 new jobs in the local economy. It is currently unclear as to the nature of the workforce, as Apple has preferred to keep its core software engineering team in California with most working solely in Cupertino....
