Apple has cut Tim Cook’s 2016 pay by a little over $1.5M after the company failed to achieve both revenue and profit goals. The news that Cook’s compensation was cut from $10.28M in 2015 to $8.75M in 2016 was spotted in a regulatory filing by the WSJ. Cook wasn’t the only one to lose out … Apple said its annual sales of $215.6 billion were 3.7% below its target of $223....

Bloomberg today reports that Apple is developing a new 3D sensor system for the 2019 iPhone. This sensor would work differently to the TrueDepth sensor system used for Face ID and would be used to add depth sensing features to the rear camera. Adding depth data to the rear camera would allow for more advanced augmented reality applications. iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus simulate depth by using a dual-camera system, and comparing the parallax of the images from the two lenses....

Following its September event yesterday, Apple has quietly dropped the price of the 1 TB iPad Pro. This makes Apple’s pricing more competitive with third-party retailers, but there are rumors of a looming iPad Pro refresh. Apple is encouraging its employees to get vaccinated against COVID-19 by offering paid time off for appointments and paid sick leave for those experiencing side effects, according to a new report by Bloomberg. Contradicting yesterday’s report by Reuters that Apple’s cloud music service is a go – but without the necessary support from record labels – Peter Kafka reported today on the Wall Street Journal’s MediaMemo blog that at least two out of four major record labels have signed on the dotted line. The rumored service will let you keep your music in the cloud and stream it to any authorized device. A source told the author that iTunes boss Eddy Cue, who appeared alongside Rupert Murdoch at The Daily introduction last February, is said to be on a tour today in New York in order to seal the remaining deals....

Asymco analyst Horace Dediu has estimated that iTunes accounts for three-quarters of all digital music sales – $6.9b a year out of a total market of around $9.3b. Apple has just published a list of App Store improvements that will begin to go into effect next Wednesday, September 7th. Apple this evening has shared two new videos as part of its Shot on iPhone campaign. Apple originally introduced videos to the campaign earlier this month and made additions two weeks ago, as well. Apple’s AI expert, Tom Gruber, delivered a TED talk back in April extolling the benefits that AI may provide for us in the years to come. The video of the onstage presentation has now been released and gives us a better glimpse into the future Gruber imagines. His presentation focuses on what he calls “humanistic AI”, the belief that when machines get smarter, so will we. Gruber explains that “the purpose of AI is to empower humans with machine intelligence” and that the two can work together effectively....

Following reports in recent weeks that Apple held talks regarding a potential investment in Softbank’s $100bn technology fund, today the company confirmed that it will indeed invest $1 billion into the project known as the “Softbank Vision Fund.” The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple confirmed the investment today and also offered a statement provided by company spokesperson Kristin Huguet. In the statement, the company says it thinks the investment will help “speed the development of technologies which may be strategically important to Apple....

With the release of iOS 6 Beta 3 in July, Apple already started rolling out its new @iCloud email addresses starting with users creating new Apple IDs or enabling mail on iCloud for the first time. Since then, Apple has started rolling out @iCloud addresses to existing @me.com and @mac.com users, reserving users the same address but with the iCloud.com domain. Today, Apple is sending out notification emails to more iCloud users to inform them an iCloud email address has been reserved and is ready to access....

Apple has finally released its revamped iTunes application, iTunes 11, for the Mac.
