Apple has successfully acquired Turi, a machine learning company based out of Seattle. According to sources in discussion with GeekWire, Turi’s team will be able to remain in the Seattle region as Apple builds out the technologies further. Turi’s original product, GraphLab, was developed as an open source project for machine learning tasks, but eventually moved into data-mining tasks as it out-performed competitors. Turi held a Data Science Summit in San Francisco earlier last month and has been uploading videos to their official YouTube account dissecting what machine learning is and the future for it....

The start of summer marks the annual kick off of Apple Camp, a collection of hands-on activities helping kids explore creativity. For 2021, Apple is back with a new lineup of in-store and at-home experiences for youth to discover. With a recent European Commission ruling making it look more likely than ever that Apple’s tax arrangements in Ireland will be declared illegal, Bloomberg has been doing the sums on how much the company may owe in back tax. The total? More than $8 billion. Apple funnels all its European revenue through Ireland, where a special agreement with the Irish government means that it pays just 2.5% tax instead of the normal 12....

Apple supplier Dialog Semiconductor warned investors that its revenue growth will be lower than expected this year. The news follows a report in November of last year that suggested Apple is developing in-house power management chips, which is what Dialog currently supplies to the company… In a statement released this evening to The Financial Times, Dialog said that Apple has decided to order “30 percent fewer” of the chips this year than it normally does....

After officially bringing iTunes music and movies to India alongside a huge international rollout in December, Apple appears to have now launched Apple TV in the country. The Apple TV product page on Apple’s India website was first spotted by BGR India, but Apple has yet to issue an official press release announcing the product launch. The product page doesn’t include a “buy” button, and some reports claim stock has not yet made it to Apple resellers in the country....

Apple Music for Android has been updated today with several enhancements. This update first entered beta testing last month and is now available to all users through Google Play Store. The new version of Apple Music for Android brings some of the new features previously available for iPhone and iPad users with iOS 13, including time-synced lyrics, a redesigned Now Playing interface, and Dark Mode. It’s nice to see that Android users don’t have to wait for feature parity with Apple’s updates on their own devices....

Earlier today, the Apple Books app sent out a push notification offering a free Apple Book to users. The notification mentioned read-alongs for kids, cozy mysteries, and audiobooks for the whole family. Most likely aimed at helping folks pass the time when much of the world is social distancing due to COVID-19, Apple is offering a wide-ranging collection of free titles in various genres. In browsing the section, I found several titles that I picked up for my kids and me....

There are a few new goodies for iOS developers shipping during the holiday season. Over the weekend, app analytics firm AppFigures released a cool new feature called ‘Sharable Review Cards’. Essentially, developers can curate their App Store reviews for some of their best feedback and quickly share a link to that comment for others to admire. The cards take on the theme from the app icon, so each review card appearance matches the app it is about....

After having their reputation damaged by the National Security Agency controversy earlier this year, Apple, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, and many more are joining forces to demand more transparency regarding NSA requests and surveillance (via AllThingsD). The 63 companies, investors, and non-profit organizations are pleading with the U.S. government to allow Internet, phone, and other service providers to share the requests that they receive for user data, including: The number of government requests for information about their users The number of individuals, accounts, or devices for which information was requested The number of requests that sought communications content, basic subscriber information, and/or other information....

As it continues to ramp up its focus on content, Apple has reportedly acquired the rights to the documentary “Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives.” As detailed in a report from Deadline, the film opens Tribeca Film Festival today, suggesting that Apple may have a presence at the festival.. Specific information regarding Apple’s acquisition of the documentary are unclear at this point. It’s unknown how much Apple paid for the rights, nor is it clear as to when or how Apple plans to release the film....

Apple has updated its website for the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus in Japan to add support for Quasi Zenith Satellite System (QZSS), a Japanese satellite positioning system that could improve location features for users in the region versus traditional GPS (via Macotakara.jp). While it’s unclear if users are already benefiting from the support for the positioning system, the website for QZSS is also now listing iPhone 7 and 7 Plus as a supported device alongside Apple Watch Series 2....

Save the date. Apple has officially announced its next big event for Tuesday, September 10, where we expect to see the iPhone 11 revealed. This date lines up with the rumored event date based on a leaked asset in iOS 13 beta earlier this month. After forecasting a record quarter with revenue between $84 billion and $87 billion, Apple has just reported its quarterly results for the last three months of 2017. While Apple’s previous quarter included initial iPhone 8 sales, today’s results are the first to include initial iPhone X sales as it launched in early November. Apple reports $88.3b in revenue and $20.1b profit from 77.3m iPhones, 13.2m iPads, and 5.1m Macs sold. That compares to $78....

Remember Apple’s upcoming retail store in Dresden’s suburban mall we told you about? Today the company confirmed on its German retail site plans to officially open this store on Thursday, March 31, at 8am. Matter of fact, grand opening is being planned throughout the weekend, with extended store hours from Thursday (8am to 10pm) to Friday (9:30am to 10pm) and Saturday (9:30am to 12am). Beginning with April 4, the store will resume normal working hours between Monday-Saturday from 9:30am to 9pm....

Update: An anonymous source cited by MacRumors claims that Apple is planning a major expansion of its retail store program in Latin America, with the first two stores slated for Mexico City. A blurry photo of a claimed internal recruitment document (below) is provided. Other countries are also said to be in line for their own Apple Stores, including Chile, Peru and Argentina. The tipster claims the first Mexico City store will be located in the upscale Via Santa Fe area of Centro Santa Fe, the largest shopping mall in Latin America, while the second store will allegedly be in a prominent shopping district and adopt Apple’s next-generation store design used in Brussels, Cupertino, Dubai and elsewhere....

Two senior government officials have said that Apple is ‘discussing with the Indian government the possibility of manufacturing its products in the country,’ reports the WSJ. Apple is said to be seeking financial incentives in order to proceed. Apple has been trying for some time to open retail stores in India, plans which have been stymied by a government requirement to source 30% of products locally in order to be permitted to open single-brand stores....

Over the past few days, a notable amount of users have complained about WiFi issues plaguing the new 11-inch and 13-inch MacBook Air models released during the week of WWDC. Besides less-battery-intensive chipsets, the marquee feature of the new MacBook Air revolves around faster WiFi connectivity thanks to new 802.11ac cards. As with any new product, bugs are plausible.
